The temple of Leimapokpa
Keirungba, located in the compound of Manipur State Road Transport
Corporation at Yaiskul, Imphal is attributed to Leimapokpam Dev Singh,
better known as Leipok Keirungba, and he is said to have built the temple
in 1875 A. D.
Leipok keirungba worshipped
Radha-Binodata here in this temple. The locality of the temple was at one
time occupied by the Police Bazar.
The temple
is built of lakhori bricks. The structure of the temple demonstrates a
square shaped, double-celled type. The inner sanctum has a
circumambulatory path around it. The main facade of the temple faces
south, but is highlighted by a semicircular arch supported by three
pillars on each side of the arch span. The pillars are arranged in the
form of a triangle. These are decorated with leaf motifs. Above the
semi-circular arch are rows of holes shaped in geometrical figures,
more like hexagonal patterns. There is a replica of minor shrines with
stupi, each on either sides of the arch. Above the cornice there is
railing having floral designs on it. The roof is approachable by
aspiral staircase provided on the western wall.
The
architectural conception of this temple indicates influence of several
architectural practices that seeped into the region through different
sources. A few scholars feel that the temple is evident of the
processes of assimilation of different cultures in the State. The are
under protection is 264.88 sq.m.
