Menhir at State Museum Approach Road

bullet This protected menhir is located on the southern  edge of the approach road leading from the Kangla Pat highway, near M-Sector, to Mapan Kangjeibung and Manipur State Museum.
bullet It is roughly estimated that the menhir was erected some time in the 15th Century A.D. Scholars are of the opinion that the menhir was erected primarily as boundary stone demarcating the boundary between Konthoujam Yumpham (present Raj Bhavan) and the one time market place (Kha-keithel, which was later on referred as the Sanakeithel) that used to be located at the site now occupied by Johnstone Hr. Secondary School. It is stated that ladies of the royal family used to shop as well as participate in the marketing here at the Sanakeithel.
bullet An intriguing feature of the menhir is three crude human figures engraved on it. This is an instance of the earliest form of folk engravings in Manipur. It adds certain importance to the menhir, besides its historical implication. The area under protection of this site is 4 x 3 sq. m.
