A PROFILE OF ALL INDIA RADIO, IMPHAL
Prologue
All India Radio, Imphal station commenced its public service broadcasting with a modest setup on 15th August 1963. Initially, it was consisting of a pilot studio and a 200 watt Medium wave (MW) transmitter. Within a couple of years, it was augmented to a one killowatt (kw) transmitter. This transmitter enabled AIR to cover Imphal town and surrounding villages only. The pilot studio was housed in the present Raj Bhavan complex and the transmitter in the DM college campus. To cover the entire state of Manipur, a 50 kw MW high power transmitter was commissioned near the Mayang Imphal village in a site measuring 34.5 acres in October 1972. This improved the coverage of the station substantially to an extent of 75% of the area of Manipur state. Studio center was shifted to present location at Palace compound during 1980. Presently, this complex consists of an office block, type III studio setup and a10 kw FM transmitter. The one kw transmitter is also housed in the studio complex and being used during power supply failure at HPT. Captive generators have been provided at the studio complex for operating the studios and FM transmitter. Studio setup consists of a drama, music and talk studio along with dubbing room and control room. Consider in still there are number of uncovered packets in the hill terrain, a SW transmitter of 50 kw was installed and commissioned on 1992 at Mayang Imphal center.
